The Gentle Path at The Meadows program is based on the work of Dr. Patrick Carnes combined with the Meadows Model, developed by Pia Mellody. We believe trauma underlies nearly all conditions, including sex addiction. Trauma, whether related to addiction, family-of-origin issues, or abuse, can reverberate through the many facets of our lives, follow us into adulthood, and inhibit us from living in the present.
What are Co-Occurring Disorders?
Co-occurring disorders describe the presence of two or more disorders at the same time. For example, a person may suffer from alcohol addiction as well as sex addiction issues. There is no single combination of co-occurring disorders in regards to male sexual addiction, and a component in understanding the loss of control experienced by the addict is the concept of the “hijacked brain.”
Addicts essentially have rewired their brains so that they engage in negative behaviors (drinking, drug use, eating, gambling, and sex) even when they intend to do something quite different. The triggers to these dysfunctional responses are usually:
- Emotional pain
- Specific childhood trauma
- Sexual abuse
- Physical abuse
- Sexual trauma
At Gentle Path at The Meadows, we address the underlying causes and relationship of these co-occurring disorders to help facilitate long-term patient recovery.
Co-Occurring Disorders and Sex Addiction Treatment
Our confidential and all-inclusive campus offers men a peaceful setting in which they can quick-start their recovery process. Some co-occurring disorders we treat include:
Drug Addiction – it is not uncommon for sexual addiction issues to lead to drug addiction or vice versa.
Alcohol Addiction – can cause individuals to drink to the point of experiencing complete memory loss of hours or days, and can increase the likelihood of high-risk behaviors such as acting out sexually.
Compulsive Disorders – is sometimes called hypersexuality, hypersexual disorder, or nymphomania. It’s an unhealthy obsession with sexual thoughts, urges, or behaviors.
Personality Disorders – is a type of mental disorder in which you have a rigid and unhealthy pattern of thinking, functioning, and behaving.
We treat sex addiction and a variety of co-occurring conditions. Our objective is to address the root trauma at the heart of each patient’s struggle. Gentle Path at The Meadows treats patients who are primarily experiencing sexual addiction, but may also be struggling with one or more of the following conditions:
- Drug Addiction
- Alcohol Addiction
- Cocaine Addiction
- Heroin Addiction
- Bipolar Disorder
- Love Addiction
- Love Avoidance
- Panic/Anxiety Disorders
- Work Addiction
- Gambling Addiction
